In December, Professor Santiago Guevara’s colleagues at the University of Carabobo, Venezuela were overjoyed to learn that their friend had been released from detention after ten long months. But they were shocked to see the change in him; while in custody, Professor Guevara lost approximately 25 kilos (see above for images of Professor Guevara before and after his detention).
As Professor Guevara works to regain his health, he still needs your help. A military court has charged him with “treason” and “incitement to rebellion” in apparent retaliation for his peaceful academic work on economic and social instability in Venezuela under the current government. His initial hearing has been deferred seven times and no date has been set. Until these legal proceedings are resolved, Professor Guevara’s bank accounts have been frozen and his life remains in limbo.
SAR asks you to join us in urging Venezuelan authorities to drop the charges against Professor Guevara and, pending his earliest release, to ensure that the case against him proceeds in a manner consistent with international law.
